Get Ready—8K Canon R5c Will Join Mirrorless Line

The 8K camera will be the newest to join Canon’s mirrorless family.

Up until the adoption of 4K mirrorless as its flagship camera platform, Canon was known for a leisurely development cycle, taking its time in keeping up with the digital revolution. But with the R series of cameras, it’s been full steam ahead to 8K, with the R5c planned for January 2022.

According to the latest from Canon Rumors, the R5c will be capable of shooting 12-bit 8K at 30 frames per second, courtesy of the same 45mp CMOS sensor and DIGIC X Image Processor found in the R5. Shooters will need to capture using Canon Cinema Raw Light, but will also have the option of 4K using Log 3, XF-AVC, or mp4 compression. Log 2 may also be coming along for the ride, once the design is finalized.

Canon is also adding in-body image stabilization (IBIS) and active cooling, which prompted the LCD to have to be moved further back to make room for a fan to keep the sensor cool while shooting at 8K.
