Finalists for the World Photography Organisation’s Sony World Photography Awards 2022
The World Photography Organisation has announced the Professional Finalists and Shortlisted photographs for its Sony World Photography Awards 2022 photo competition.
The competition is now in its 15th year and, in World Photography Organisation’s own words, ‘rewards remarkable series of works both for technical skill and an original approach to contemporary subjects.’ This year, more than 340,000 images from 211 countries and territories were submitted, with over 156,000 of those being entered into the Professional competition—the most ever in the competition’s history.
Of those images, the organizers selected three finalists and projects for each of the 10 categories: Architecture & Design, Creative, Documentary Projects, Environment, Landscape, Portfolio, Portraiture, Sport, Still Life and Wildlife & Nature. Below is a rundown (from World Photography Organisation) of each of the judges who selected the images for this year’s competition:
‘The work of finalist and shortlisted photographers in the Professional competition was judged by: Rahaab Allana, Curator and Publisher, Alkazi Foundation for the Arts, New Delhi; Ângela Ferreira, artist, independent photography curator and postdoc researcher at Escola de Belas Artes Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro Brazil; Deborah Klochko, Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, United States; Richmond Orlando Mensah, Founder and Creative Director, Manju Journal, Ghana; and Mike Trow, Independent Curator and Photo Editor, Chair of the Jury.’
The winning photograph for the Photographer of the Year 2022 award will be selected from the Professional finalists on April 12, 2022 and will be part of the exhibit set to take place from April 13 through May 2, 2022 at Somerset House in London.

Landscape Finalist
© Majid Hojjati, Iran, Shortlist, Professional, Landscape, 2022 Sony World Photography Awards |
Image Name: Chahar Mahal and Bakhtiari Province – Kurd City – 2021
Photographer Name: Majid Hojjati
Year: 2022
Image Description: A painting of lush nature, with the clean climate of Chahar Mahal and Bakhtiari province’s past, is located in the dry desert of this province. The sign reads: ‘I must remember not to do anything that is against the law of the Earth’.
Series Name: The Earth Belongings
Series Description: Life has meaning in human beliefs with its symbols. Mountains, forests, plains, free and beautiful creatures, and clear blue skies are all creations that will come to mind when we hear the word ‘life’. Where it is free from the fence of man, and there is no trace of human presence in it, it is ‘nature’. Where humans stepped in without understanding and respecting the spirit of nature, they endangered the existence of other beings. And then from this soil, nothing but a lifeless body will remain. The mountains will forget the flight of the eagles, and the noble howls of the horses will not be heard in the plains; and even the lion, that king of the forest, will be only a name in the books. These elements belong to the planet and are inseparable from it, without them what is left is a cold, lost and distorted image that no longer resembles anything. Maybe it’s time to weigh what we have taken from nature and what we have given it and measure what we have done with the universe.

The highlight of this celebration is a competition of a martial art called Huka-huka, similar to the Greco-Roman wrestling fight, which has competitive symbolism that shows the strength and virility of the young men. These photographs were taken during a Kuarup celebration in the Afukuri village of the Kuikuro ethnic group. This year’s ritual honoured the people who lost their lives between the years 2020 and 2021: four of five were victims of Covid-19.
