ON1 has announced ON1 Resize AI, a new application that leverages the power of artificial intelligence to produce higher-quality, sharper photo enlargements than ON1’s previous resizing software, including ON1 Resize, which is powered by Genuine Fractals. ON1 calls Resize AI ‘the biggest improvement in resize history.’
ON1 Resize AI, which is available as standalone software or as a plugin, uses machine learning technology to recreate the details in your image that typically get lost during enlargement. When enlarging photos in other applications, the software uses interpolation to duplicate existing pixels to create the larger final image. In the demo video below, ON1 shows off its new Resize AI software and how its AI-based approach compares to traditional interpolation, including a bicubic interpolation method used to enlarge images in most photo apps, including Photoshop.
While ON1 doesn’t specify one of its competitors in the video above, it may be Topaz Labs’ Gigapixel AI software, which, like ON1 Resize AI, uses AI and deep learning to drive its enlargement technology. Although it’s not clear precisely which software is being compared, it’s clear that ON1’s new solution promises sharp results.
ON1 writes, ‘ON1 Resize AI uses deep machine learning to study different details we see in the world, whether natural textures like tree bark, animal fur, feathers, grass, leaves, rock, and skin to man-made textures like concrete, fabric, or brick. Studying millions of examples of the everyday world will allow the software to upscale photos and their textures to virtually any size, leaving photographers with ultra-high resolution images.’ Compared to traditional photo enlargement methods, Resize AI promises sharper results with less noise.
‘It’s simply amazing. We’ve been working on this project for quite a while, and everyone will be flat out amazed at how big they can make their photos. I’m still in awe of the results I can get using ON1 Resize AI,’ says Dan Harlacher, VP of Product.
ON1 Resize AI allows users to save enlarged files or even print directly from the application. The app includes different printing tools, such as options for creating gallery wraps and dividing an image into tiles for mural prints. The software can be used to crop and enlarge photos, enlarge existing photos from older cameras with smaller, lower-megapixel sensors, and even upscale video stills. ON1 Resize AI works as a plugin for Lightroom, Photoshop and Capture One and can be used as a standalone app.
Existing owners of ON1 Resize 2022 will receive ON1 Resize AI for free. If you own ON1 Photo RAW 2022, you’ll receive an update that integrates ON1 Resize AI shortly following the software’s release. ON1 Resize AI will also be part of ON1’s Professional Plugin Bundle. The bundle includes five of ON1’s pro plugins. The bundle is $149.99, and the standalone app/individual plugin is $99.99. An exact release date hasn’t been determined, but ON1 expects Resize AI to be available in April. For more information, visit ON1
