How Attention to Detail Brings del Toro’s ‘Nightmare’ to Life

Production designer Tamara Deverell and costume designer Luis Sequeria truly made “every frame a painting” in Nightmare Alley.

I’ve made no bones about how much I love Guillermo del Toro’s noir masterpiece, Nightmare Alley, so I was thrilled to have two more craftspeople who brought this layered and powerful vision to live on the podcast.

Tamara and Luis break down all the ways they got into the cracks, the seams, the wood grains (literally) on every inch of this movie. It’ll make you both astonished at how much hard work and research goes into great art, but also inspired by what can be possible when the people doing the work get to sink their teeth into something really delicious.

Be sure to check out our interview with DP Dan Laustsen and editor Cam McLaughlin about their work on the film as well.
