Keanu Reeves believes in a free Tibet, and apparently, that’s controversial.
Recently, Keanu Reeves went to a pro-Tibet benefit concert. Then, out of nowhere, all of his movies were completely scrubbed from Chinese streaming services.
The Los Angeles Times reports that China’s major streamers, iQiyi, Tencent Video, Bilibili, and Xigua Video have removed most of the films starring Reeves after the March 3 benefit concert for the New York-based nonprofit, which is affiliated with the Dalai Lama.
China Digital Times researcher Alex Yu told the Times, “We tend to think of the censorship machine in China as this really coordinated monster, but the fact that we’re seeing these conflicting signals [between the online and theatrical markets] suggests that some of these measures come from different places.”
It’s so wild, even his small voice role in Toy Story 4 has a sort of censored part. When the credits play, they’re in English, except for the voice cast which switches to Chinese, and then only the local dubbing cast is credited, so no mention of Reeves.
