We’re still reeling from Sunday’s Oscar ceremony. But remember when the Academy actually liked movies?
We’ve been talking a lot about everything that happened at the Academy Awards. Unfortunately, our general consensus is that this was the worst Oscars in a long, long time, and it ended up being a ceremony that seemed to devalue the very craft it is supposed to celebrate.
Signs weren’t good from the start when the Academy decided to cut several of the craft awards from the main ceremony, opting to award several statues off-air while celebrities were still arriving outside. A few creators made a point to arrive early—but despite this choice, the ceremony still ran long. What was the point?
Then, during the show, you had jokes that often punched down or continued to devalue films, creators, and their work. Did you hear Regina Hall’s bit about offering audience members a “never-before-seen” film?
“Now, I’ve got the screener for a never-before-seen film, not even by the director,” she said. “The Last Duel.”
