Hundreds of 35mm Film Trailers Are Now Available on YouTube

It’s time to feed your nostalgia.

Trailers back in the day just seemed to hit harder. The reason wasn’t editing or music, or that guy who did that voice we all loved, but it was that movies used to be shown on film.

And film print trailers had this beautiful grain to them. It accentuated detail, and the flicker of light made movies feel magical. If you missed those trailers, the opportunity to see them again is here.

YouTube user Denis-Carl Robidoux has uploaded two playlists that contain more than a thousand videos. These are mostly trailers from studio movies in the early 2000s.

Check out these three examples.

How did he get these videos? Well, Robidoux used a Gugusse Roller, which he details in this playlist. Basically, it’s an analog film scanner where film tension is created by elastics and maintained by a computer. Then the images are scanned and played back.

It’s a fascinating process, and I encourage you to check that out, along with these classic trailers. Let us know your favorites in the comments.
