While it’s been CFexpress Type B that’s been getting most of the love lately in the photography world, Exascend isn’t content letting the CFexpress Type A format fade away. Exascend has announced its new line of Essential CFexpress Type A cards with read and write speeds of 800MB/s and 700MB/s, respectively.
This new line includes CFexpress Type A cards in three capacities: 120GB, 180GB and – most significantly – a 240GB model. The 240GB card is significant, as it is now the highest-capacity CFexpress Type A card on the market, with those from Delkin, ProGrade Digital, Sony and others topping out at 160GB. This is a significant increase that should prove useful for photographers and videographers using Sony’s a1, a7 IV, a7S III, FX3 and FX6 camera systems.

According to Exascend, the Essential CFexpress Type A series of cards is built on ‘premium 3D TLC NAND flash’ storage anded uses the PCIe 3.0 interface. They offer sustained write speeds of 550MB/s, good enough for 8K video at up to 60fps in compatible camera systems.
The cards feature Exascend’s ‘proprietary SmartStream technology’ that minimizes energy usage through dynamically-scaled CPU draw that matches the used power to the required power based on what’s being written to the card. It also uses Exascend’s Adaptive Thermal Control technology and SuperCruise technology, which manage the thermals and sustained writing performance, respectively.
Exascend says the 120GB, 180GB and 240GB Essential CFexpress Type A cards will retail for $190, $300 and $400, respectively. Each card comes with a five-year warranty. The cards are expected to be available soon, although no specific timeframe is provided.
