Midwest Photo is recovering after yet another major camera gear burglary

Midwest Photo in Columbus, OH, was burgled after someone drove a stolen truck through the store’s front entrance and made off with an unknown amount of photography equipment and gear.

The burglary occurred in the early morning hours of August 5. The police were alerted at 4:36 a.m. when an alarm went off and arrived shortly after. However, before police arrived, at least one burglar departed the scene with stolen gear. The store’s owner, Moishe Applelbaum, wasn’t sure how much gear was stolen, but posted on Facebook that staff had worked hard to ensure the store could open during the weekend.

Midwest Photo wrote, ‘Wow- what a weekend! If you haven’t heard, we had a truck drive through our store early Friday morning. We don’t want to focus on the damage done, but rather on our staff who we love so much who were able to pull this place back together to allow us to open this weekend without a hitch. We have been utterly overwhelmed at the outpouring of love the photo community has shown us over the past few days, and it’s been the power that has driven us forward from this to continue to serve Columbus. Thank you, thank you, thank you.’

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Midwest Photo has been the victim of a crime. In March 2017, experienced thieves stole hundreds of cameras, lenses and accessories. Thieves broke through the store’s roof and slid down a pipe into the shop. The latest robbery was much less precise and professional but no less damaging.

While police continue to work to apprehend any individuals involved in the crime, it’s important to point out that photographers scouring the online marketplace for new photo equipment should be on the lookout for any deals that appear to be too good to be true. It’s not unusual for stolen gear to be sold at especially low prices. If you have any information or want to alert Midwest Photo to a suspicious product listing, please contact the store.
