Sony’s Xperia Pro, Pro-I devices get waveform, false color monitoring and more in software update

Sony has announced software updates for its Xperia Pro and Pro-I smartphones that bring new and improved features to the smartphones’ external monitoring capabilities, as well as the ability to livestream directly to online video platforms using the devices’ 5G connectivity.

The new monitoring tools bring both waveform and false color monitoring overlays – two features we’re accustomed to seeing in more professional monitoring tools. The waveform overlay can showcase luminance data, RGB data or a combination of the two at the same time. The false color overlay assigns a specific color to different areas of the image depending on the exposure level in the scene to better visualize when an area might be over- or under-exposed.

The monitor app will also enable additional external controls for changing camera settings directly on Xperia Pro and Pro-I devices, including a ‘Rec/Stop’ trigger when connected to a compatible Alpha cameras. On-screen REC status, shutter speed, F-number, ISO and EV Indication overlays will also be available so you can better see the camera’s settings at a glance.

Sony has also added the ability to share live-streamed videos through video content delivery platform such as YouTube. This feature uses the 5G wireless capabilities of the Xperia Pro and Pro-I devices.

These updates should be available to all Xperia Pro and Pro-I users via a push notification. If the update isn’t yet available on your device, turn your device off and back on and return to the settings to trigger the update.
