What else has HBO Max gutted?
A little over a week ago, we covered Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav’s very public rejection of focusing on building streaming subscriptions for HBO Max and instead pulling that all the way back to being a theatrical company. Warner Bros. Discovery has already shelved new films Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt. The cancellations of the two completed feature films came as a shock to the industry, and everyone wanted to know what was going on.
Since then, HBO Max has yanked 68 more titles from its streaming service. Many of them were completed just for the service and were happily providing a deeper library for the app. But many of those still cost money to pay people residuals, so the slashing and burning of titles began. The ones that did not pay residuals apparently also didn’t align with what Zaslav saw HBO Max becoming—as long as HBO Max remains.
Today Variety reported that the platform pulled roughly 200 older episodes of Sesame Street. Our inner children are sobbing.
