Update (August 22, 2022 at 1pm ET): The headline and article incorrectly stated these parts and guides were for M2-powered devices. That is incorrect, these are for M1 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models. The article has been updated accordingly.
Tomorrow, Apple is expanding its Self Service Repair program to its new M1-powered MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptop models. This expansion of the Self Service Repair program, which offers OEM components, guides and tools so consumers can repair their own devices, builds upon the initial launch, which started last November for select iPhone models.
In its announcement, Apple says the Self Service Repair for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro will see the company offer over a dozen different components for the M1-powered devices. Specifically, Apple notes users will be able to purchase OEM displays, cases, batteries, trackpads and more through its Self Service Repair Store.

The process starts by selecting the repair manual for the product and part(s) required for the repair. Once you’ve sleected the correct manual, go to the Self Service Repair Store to purchase the parts and tools required to get the job done. These parts and tools should be identical to those used in Apple Store locations as well as Apple Authorized Service Providers, which should ensure the replaced part will effectively be good as new.
For the parts being replaced, Apple says they can be sent back to Apple for refurbishment and recycling. In some cases, credit can be applied to the purchase price of the new parts and tools. Should you not want to purchase the tools outright for the repair, Apple will offer rental tool kits for $49, which will give you a week with the full professional kit required to do the repair yourself.
Apple says the Self Service Repair program ‘will expand to additional countries — beginning in Europe — as well as additional Mac models later this year.’
