Product of the Year 2022: the results
The final round of voting has closed, and it’s time to reveal the winner of our annual Readers’ Choice Awards! Beginning in December, DPReview readers picked their favorite cameras, zoom lenses and prime lenses released in 2022. The winners of the first round of voting were then pitted against each other for the title of Product of the Year. Take a look and see which products came out on top.
Third place: Nikon Z 400mm F4.5 VR S
The Nikon Z 400mm F4.5 VR S was one of two 400mm prime lenses launched by Nikon in 2022, both of which did very well in our Readers’ Choice polls, but the 400mm F4.5 model proved incredibly popular among our readers thanks to its compact size, excellent performance, and approachable price. Its images impressed us with sharp performance across the frame, pleasing bokeh, and well-controlled flare and ghosting, and it fits inside many camera bags alongside your other gear.
At less than a quarter of the price of Nikon’s new 400mm F2.8 lens, the 400mm F4.5 VR S also delivers a lot of bang for the buck. With 23.2% of the vote, it earned third place in our 2021 Readers’ Choice poll for best product of 2022.
Runner-up: Sony a7R V
With 29.4% of the total vote, the runner-up in this year’s Readers’ poll for Product of the Year is the Sony a7R V, the fifth generation of the company’s high-resolution, full-frame mirrorless series. It may have the same sensor as its predecessor, but the a7R V arrives with improved subject recognition, particularly for non-human subjects, more sophisticated algorithms for enhanced in-body image stabilization, and a rear LCD that can articulate, tilt, or do both if desired.
Sony’s a7R series has always been a popular choice for photographers who seek high resolution, and the a7R V brings a more refined shooting experience while still delivering top-notch image quality.
Winner: Fujifilm X-H2S
And the winner of our 2022 Readers’ Choice Product of the Year award goes to the Fujifilm X-H2S, with 34.7% of the total vote. The X-H2S delivers the highest performance in an X-mount camera, thanks to its 26MP stacked sensor. Its much-improved AF system can track complex motion at high frame rates, and a large buffer makes high-speed shooting very usable.
It’s also an impressive video tool: it can capture 4K/60p video (and even 6.2K/24p), includes internal ProRes LT recording, and can capture 14-bit video at up to 30p for slightly expanded dynamic range when using Fujifilm’s new F-Log2 gamma profile. There’s even an optional cooling fan for dedicated video shooters. It’s no surprise that DPReview readers chose the Fujifilm X-H2S as their Product of the Year.
As always, thanks to everyone who voted in our polls. We appreciate your participation and couldn’t do any of this without you!
