When OM System’s new 90mm macro prime lens arrived at our offices a few weeks ago, we were excited to see how well the macro performance held up and if the new Pro addition could be the all-in-one portrait, landscape and detail lens it seemed to indicate it was.
To test it out, I spent a few weeks with the lens on an OM System OM-1, annoying my family while lying in wait for sunlight to visit Seattle. When it did, I hit the streets, chasing the few rays of light, saying hellos to strangers and keeping an eye out for very tiny things to get up close and personal with.
I wanted to try to use this lens as it was intended – a lens which could jump between long, medium and tight depending on what I wanted it to do. For me that meant a mix of landscapes and scene setters, long compressed street scenes, portraits of people I’d run into and then some more controlled macro images in and outside the studio. To really push the macro, I also tried the lens with the MC-20 2x teleconverter, which turns the 90mm lens into a 360mm equivalent.

As always, with our sample galleries we aim to test the lens with minimal edits, to give you the best idea of what the lens is putting out. The gallery images are processed from Raw, using a standard amount of sharpening and the manufacturer’s lens profile. The original Raws can be downloaded so you can experiment with your own processing.
