As part of our upcoming review, we’ve completed studio testing on the EOS R8. Not surprisingly, it looks a lot like the EOS R6 II, with which it shares a sensor, but its dependence on electronic first curtain shutter seems to means there’s a tiny noise penalty at the very highest high ISOs.
Studio test scene
Our test scene is designed to simulate a variety of textures, colors and detail types you’ll encounter in the real world. It also has two illumination modes to see the effect of different lighting conditions.
The EOS R8 sits somewhere between the entry-level models such as Nikon’s Z5 and Sony’s rather long-in-the-tooth a7 II, and the mid-level bodies such as the Nikon Z6 II and Panasonic Lumix DC S5 II. It’s the only one in this company to lack in-body image stabilization, but its use of the R6 II sensor means it can offer a higher video spec than any of its peers.
We’ll look at details such as dynamic range as part of our full review in the coming weeks, but we didn’t want to withhold these results as we ramp our testing studio back up.
