Are you an artificial intelligence expert? Well, it seems like Netflix might have a job for you that pays really, really well. They are offering $900,000 for an AI product manager.
This all is happening as they brush aside the SAG-AFTRA claims about fair pay when 87 percent of SAG-AFTRA members earn less than $26,000 a year.
Of course, these are great jobs. I am all for seeing people employed, but not if it means their jobs come at the expense of thousands of writers and actors trying to get Netflix to pay their fair share.
This is also happening as SAG-AFTRA and the WGA are fighting attempts to be replaced by AI.
While many think streamers are far away from this technology, it’s clear they are willing to pay a premium for technicians to come in and help them do just that.
We’ve heard SAG-AFTRA talk about the scanning of background actors who may only receive $200 for their likeness, which would be used in perpetuity. Esteemed screenwriter John August explained that we have to make sure “ChatGPT and its cousins can’t be credited with writing a screenplay.”
Netflix’s ad for the job asks for someone to help them create content and someone with knowledge points across Hollywood. And this isn’t the only job they have available. If you’re fluent in generative AI, you can make up to $650k a year working at Netflix.
We are at the precipice of huge changes within Hollywood.
The idea that you can come here and be valued for your independent voice and ideas is waning. We have to do everything we can to protect human beings in these jobs.
Otherwise, there will be no new generation behind us.
