Jacob Elordi is one of the hottest actors in all of Hollywood. The star of Sofia Coppola‘s Priscilla and HBO’s Euphoria seems like he shot to fame from nowhere, but it was actually The Kissing Booth movies on Netflix that put him on the map.

These were sweet movies about teen crushes and kisses, and they were incredibly popular. They were so popular they helped make a star out of Elordi and opened the world to him to advance his career.
But Elordi recently sat down with GQ, where he talked about not really wanting to be in those films.
“I didn’t want to make those movies before I made those movies,” Elordi said in the interview. “Those movies are ridiculous. They’re not universal. They’re an escape.”
This sort of hating comes many times from young, inexperienced actors. But usually, people are not as vocal or say they embraced breaking in or are now focusing on more serious roles.
Well, Elodri continued on his pace, denying that the movies fell into the “one for them, one for you” philosophy of acting.
He said, “That one’s a trap as well. Because it can become 15 for them, none for you. You have no original ideas and you’re dead inside. So it’s a fine dance. My ‘one for them,’ I’ve done it.”
Later, he doubled down on how he views the films he makes. “How is caring about your output pretentious?” Elordi quipped. “But not caring, and knowingly feeding people shit, knowing that you’re making money off of people’s time, which is literally the most valuable thing that they have. How is that the cool thing?”
A lot of this feels like an actor who desperately wants his reps and the town to know he wants to do more serious films with serious filmmakers. Earlier in the interview, he talked about not wanting to be Superman, a role many would jump at the chance to embody.
Work is hard to come by, and to achieve your goals, you also need to make enough money to survive and get enough screen time to impress. Whatever Elordi does next, he should be happy he was given the opportunity to ascend.
I get not embracing everything you do, but it’s OK to say less about it and just be thankful you can do what you want now.
