When you’re starting out learning filmmaking, one of the first lessons you need to master is the idea of three-point lighting.
Within that concept comes the idea of a rim light, which can add to that setup and help you use effects that dictate genre, storytelling, and lots of other things on screen.
But what is a rim light, and how do you use it effectively? Today, we’re going to go over all that and more.
Let’s dive in.
What is a Rim Light?
A rim light is a lighting technique that creates a bright outline around a subject. It’s often used to create a “halo” effect.
Why Use a Rim Light
Rim lights are very useful on set. They help the subject stand out from the background, especially with low-key light or scenes in the dark.
It can also add a dramatic and mysterious feel to the image.
Outside of all that, it creates a sense of depth and form for what you’re putting on screen.
How to Use a Rim Light
In order to use a rim light, the light is placed behind the subject, most of the time off to the side, and then angled towards the person.
That will create a bright line along the outside of a person which makes them seem three-dimensional.
Three Point Lighting
The rim light is used as the backlight in a three-point lighting setup. It plays a crucial role in creating a professional and polished look by adding depth, separation, and visual interest to the subject.
Summing Up Rim Lights
Now that you know what a rim light is, you can use it in your own work to highlight and give depth.
If you want to set a spooky mood, make someone look angelic, or just have them pop on screen, this is the gateway to all your cinematography needs.
