Meet Venus Optics’ New Compact Anamorphic Zoom Series, Laowa Proteus 2x

For DPs looking for lightweight and compact anamorphic zoom lenses for their various cinematography projects, Venus Optics has dropped a nice new series that should be ideal for S35 sensors and start at $5,999 each (or cheaper bundled together).

The new Venus Optics Laowa Proteus 2x Anamorphic Zoom Series is the company’s most compact and affordable series for S35 sensors yet and should provide a nice mix of mobility and versatility for DPs looking for options for all types of projects.

Let’s look at these two new Laowa Proteus 2x Anamorphic Zoom lenses, which will cover a 26-45mm T2.9 and a 45-85mm T2.9, here to see if they might be right for your cinematography needs.


Laowa Proteus 2x Anamorphic Zoom Series

Featuring the same unique 2x squeezed anamorphic look that we saw with the Laowa Proteus Prime Series, this new Laowa Proteus 2x Anamorphic Zoom Series will further offer the same organic oval bokeh, short closest focusing distance (up to 50cm), and cinematic flare options that will include amber flare, blue flare, and silver flare choices.

Both these Laowa Proteus Zoom Series lenses will come in native ARRI PL Mount options with an included interchangeable Canon EF mount, as well as offer options for additional bayonets, which will also offer Canon RF, Nikon Z, Sony E, and L mount versions as well.

Designed to be ideal for cameras like the ARRI Alexa S35 or the RED V-Raptor, these adaptable Super35 anamorphic zoom lenses will be solid options for cinematographers looking to provide support for some of the best cameras currently on the market.

Plus, when combined with the separately available Proteus 45-85mm zoom, the two lenses can provide a wide, versatile 26-85mm range and a 3.27x zoom ratio.

Similar to the above, the Laowa Proteus 45-85mm T2.9 2x S35 Anamorphic Zoom from Venus Optics is also lightweight and compact and covers Super 35 sensors. It’s also a great option for all types of shooting situations and setups, including handheld, stabilizers, gimbals, and other fast, run-and-gun setups.
