Stunt performers everywhere jumped out of planes, took pratfalls, and exploded their squibs to rejoice at the Academy Awards, finally adding them to a category.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that it has officially announced a brand-new Oscar category: Achievement in Stunt Design.
This is a landmark decision recognizing the vital role stunt performers and coordinators play in creating cinematic magic. From breathtaking action sequences in franchises like Mission: Impossible and John Wick to the intricate work seen in countless other films, stunts have always been a crucial part of filmmaking.
It’s a shame it came a little too late for Jackie Chan, but I am excited for everyone in the future. It’s about time they got recognized for literally risking their lives for our entertainment.
This is not an immediate award addition. The first one will be presented at the 100th Academy Awards ceremony in 2028. The award will honor films released in the calendar year 2027.
“Since the early days of cinema, stunt design has been an integral part of filmmaking,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang. “We are proud to honor the innovative work of these technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them for their commitment and dedication in reaching this momentous occasion.”
We’re so excited for this news and for the stunts to come.
